Located approximately 25 minutes northeast of downtown Columbus, Ohio, Big Walnut Local Schools provides instructional services for children who live in the greater Galena and Sunbury communities, including parts of Porter, Kingston, Trenton, Harlem, Genoa and Berkshire townships. Big Walnut is located in Delaware County – the fastest growing county in Ohio. With three elementary schools, a middle school, high school, and a partnership with the Delaware Area Career Center, the district serves over 3,000 students and employs more than 300 staff.
The District //
The Big Walnut Schools have received "Excellent" designations from the Ohio Department of Education for our outstanding student learning every year since 2005.
Our school district provides a challenging and dynamic learning environment that fosters excellence, opportunity and innovation in meeting the educational needs of our students and community. Big Walnut Middle and High School students consistently exceed state averages for the Ohio Graduation and Ohio Achievement Tests. Over 85 percent of Big Walnut students score at the “proficient” level or higher on these same tests.
Caring and highly qualified teaching and support staff members provide relevant and challenging learning opportunities for students in an environment that is safe and respectful.
A diverse and rigorous curriculum has been designed to meet and exceed state and national standards for student learning and achievement. Special Education and Gifted programs meet the unique needs of learners at all levels, while expecting excellence from all.
The Big Walnut Community //
One hundred and forty years ago, the residents of Galena built their first school on Walnut Street. The school boasted a full curriculum and separate recesses for boys and girls. Today the building serves as the Administrative offices for the Big Walnut Local Schools.
In 1873, Sunbury consolidated the local one-room schoolhouses into a new school located on Harrison Street. The building received additions in 1913 and 1924. More than 100 year later in 1974, the original building was removed to make room for another addition to the school.
The Delaware County Board of Education joined the Sunbury and Galena school districts in 1950 to create the present Big Walnut Local School district. It was named for the creek joining the two villages.
Although the Galena and Sunbury villages post an official, combined population of about 3000 people, the district covers over 108 square miles. The Big Walnut area is primarily residential, offering a pleasant combination of rural and agricultural living. The median household income is just over $43,000 annually.
The district has a rich heritage of strong community support and participation in school activities. Big Walnut recently completed an addition to the high school, library renovations and extensive renovations to school facilities. With cost-per-pupil expenditures below the state average, a bond rating of Aa3 and one of the lowest tax rates in Delaware and Franklin counties, the district has a reputation for strong fiscal management.
Big Walnut receives unparalleled support from parents and families, business and community leaders. Well-established roots and a strong value for education, combined with a dynamic vision for the future make the Big Walnut communities an ideal place to live and raise a family.
