Update ~ April 12, 2012

Some points of interest from the 4/9/2012 Board of Education meeting.

  • Student of the Month: Audrey Rice - 5th grade student at General Rosecrans Elementary. Congratulations!

  • Special recognition awarded to six high school students for their achievements during the Indoor Track season as State Qualifiers. They are: Olivia Small, Leah Thomas, Brea Medlock, Liz Carty, Jamie Annis and Asia Medlock. Go Eagles!

  • Art presentation by students from General Rosecrans Elementary and Mrs. McWilliams, art teacher.

  • Brief report by Felicia Drummey, District Treasurer, about some alterations under consideration for school fees at the middle and high school levels. The administrative team will be doing some additional research on this before making a formal recommendation to the board.

  • She also reported that the district continues to remain 'on-target' for the 2010 Operating Levy to last 5 years under the current assumptions.

  • A brief presentation was given concerning the Ohio Superintendent Evaluation System so that we can see the new system we will be using to evaluate our superintendent.

  • Mr. Barber, Assistant Superintendent, reported on a software program the district is subscribing to that will allow for more detailed reporting in a number of areas without the labor intensity it currently takes to compile those reports given the system we have. It will also allow the district to compare our costs and systems to those of other districts and communicate with them concerning increased efficiencies.

  • He also updated everyone on the status of the new custodial handbook he and his team have been developing.

  • Additionally he reported on the process he has been working through to determine the best way to eliminat the water problems that have been happening at the high school since it was built. A more formal proposal/presentation will be made at the May board meeting.
  • Mr. Mazzi discussed the proposed bell times and the survey that was available to the district parents. Data from that survey was made available and will be taken into consideration as he moves forward with his recommendation to the board. He indicated that the following four areas will be taken into consideration as he continues to formulate his recommendation:
  •   Academic Achievement
  • Growth plan/facilities
  • Fiscal Responsibility
  • Communication
  •
  • He hopes to have the final bell schedule published by the 3rd week in April.
  •
  • Mr. Mazzi also reported that the district is begining the process of looking into the current grading scale and the number of credits reqiured by the district for a student to graduate from high school. He briefly referred to some preliminary research, but indicated that he will be continuing to gather data for the Board of Education to consider.

  • All items in the New Business portion of the meeting were approved by the entire Board. Those items and the full agenda of the April Board meeting can be found on the district website (board of education tab, board meetings, archived meetings), along with the addendums and appendices.

3/2/2012 update

This is a quick update about some of the items going on in the district.

Steve Butler has been named principal for the Intermediate School opening this fall. Mr. Butler previously served as the principal at Souders Elementary, and currently serves as our district’s Gifted Coordinator.

Plans are moving forward to open the Intermediate School this fall. Mr. Mazzi and Mr. Barber have been working with staff to make preliminary preparations to re-open the building for the 2012-3013 school year.

Ron McClure, transportation director, has been working on busing schedule options that incorporate a 3-tier plan. These options will be available to view on the district website next week. A district-wide all call will be made once the options are posted on the website.  Parents will be asked to read the affiliated data and provide input about the options.

District Superintendent Steve Mazzi and Treasurer Felicia Drummey had a bond rating meeting about the refinancing of our 2004 bonds. Currently we are awaiting our credit rating from Moody’s so that we can proceed with this process. Although the realized savings to each taxpayer will be minimal, this action demonstrates the district’s desire to minimize the financial impact on the community whenever possible.
Currently the associations are reviewing the information provided at the February Board meeting by Educators Preferred Corporation concerning early retirement incentives.

Additional information about the district can be found on the district web site and specific information about each building can be found under the “schools” tab on the website.

Although comments and/or questions can be written here by the public, they will not be posted publicly but will be reviewed periodically by the blog monitor, Mindy Meyer. Specific questions and/or comments should be directed to one of the Board members or a district adminstrator directly.

Highlights from the February Board meeting:
  • Christopher Rockwell (5th grader at Big Walnut Elementary) and Dr. Lynn Kaszynski (principal at Big Walnut Elementary) were both recognized at the meeting. Christopher is the Student of the Month and Dr. K. is retiring after 41 years in education - the past 11 in our district.

  • Report about Science Fair in Big Walnut -- very successful event with 103 participants. 18 participants received 'Superior' ratings and will move on to the next round. Congratulations and Go Eagles!!

  • Big Walnut High School Senior Russell McMurry made a presentation about Flex Credit. Russell is one of 14 students in the district who is using the Flex Credit program in order to customize a learning experience for high school credit. Russell has served as an intern in the district's technology department.

  • The Board voted to re-open the old middle school as an Intermediate school for the 5/6 grade students and relocate the administrative offices there as well. This will alleviate overcrowding at BWE and GRE and allow the district to close the Galena Administrative building which is in need of costly repairs. The building will open for the 2012-2013 school year.

  • Ron McClure, director of transportation, gave a brief report about busing as it pertains to opening an additional building in the district. He presented different scenarios implementing a 3-tier busing system.

  • The Board voted to hire Mark Cooper, Big Walnut Elementary School Principal, effective August 1, 2012. This was received with applause and cheering from parents and staff in attendance.

The full agenda of the February Board meeting can be found on the district website (board of education tab, board meetings, archived meetings), along with the addendums and appendices.
