Newly Published Author
Posted: Monday, February 11, 2013

Congratulations to Sarah Stefaniak - Newly Published Author

I was fourteen, a freshman in Big Walnut High School, when the idea for My Supplier came to me through a homework assignment. I never knew how much I loved to write until Mrs. Stooksbury, in Accelerated English, told us to develop a strong character.  From that project, I created a world for this character and pretty soon a story, then a book grew.   I was given that assignment and started to create my own world. Now a Junior, still at Big Walnut, I’m writing completely new ideas for stories and continuous ideas for a sequel. When I graduate in the spring of 2014 I plan to continue my education to prepare me for a job in marketing, journalism, or screenwriting.

Ohio ACT Scores Beat National Average
Posted: Thursday, August 23, 2012
Ohio's high school class of 2012 tested better than the national average on the ACT exam. The ACT scores, which were released Wednesday, showed that Ohio had a composite score of 21.8 compared to the national average score of 21.1.

The ACT has a high score of 36 and tests students on English, reading, math and science skills. While the composite score was the same as Ohio's 2011 grade, 71 percent of the state's eligible students took the exam this year compared to 69 percent last year.

Here is how the scores break down by subject:

- English: Ohio 21.1, National 20.5
- Mathematics: Ohio 21.5, National 21.1
- Reading: Ohio 22.1, National 21.3
- Science: Ohio 21.8, National 20.9

In Ohio, 28 percent of the students hit the college readiness benchmarks in all four subjects.

ACT officials recognized Ohio as one of several states that is making a major push to improve math and science education.

Mazzi gains teaching experience
Posted: Monday, December 17, 2012

During a teacher and staff meeting at the beginning of the school year held to lay the groundwork for the year ahead, district superintendent Steve Mazzi drew a name from bowls with each building’s staff in them.

“The name I drew got the day off, and I would work their shift whether it was a teacher or a custodian or a secretary,” Mazzi said last week surrounded by Big Walnut Elementary School third grade students. “When they called the chip in, I had to do their job for the day, they got the day off, and they didn’t have to use vacation time or personal time.”

Mazzi was at BWE because he had drawn third grade teacher Karen Snyder’s name, and she called her chip in – Mazzi was a third grade teacher for the entire day, teaching a social studies module about Congress, the president, and Supreme Court.

One student said that Mazzi was kind of a tough teacher. “He makes you get it right,” the student said. “But he's really nice.”

Asked what he learned during his daylong tenure as a third grade teacher Mazzi said it’s how elementary teachers are constantly busy.

“It's nonstop on the go,” Mazzi said. “They don't switch classrooms like in middle school or high school, so you don't even get that break. It's very rejuvenating, and tiring at the same time.”

Newtown, Connecticut Tragedy
Posted: Friday, December 14, 2012
Dear Parents and Community,

Our hearts, prayers, and thoughts go out to the community of Newtown, Connecticut. This situation is simply unimaginable and as we all try to come to terms with what has happened to this community, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

As a school community, we are constantly reviewing our safety and security procedures, practicing drills and working closely with our law enforcement agencies to revisit our procedures on an ongoing basis. In fact, the administrative team worked with our local law enforcement for tactical training earlier in the school year. This research-based training is considered a best practice in the law enforcement community. The Sunbury Police Department and the Delaware County Sheriff's Department are both trained in these areas and we continue to work closely with both organizations.

Our sense of community in times of tragedy is one of our greatest strengths. We thank you for your partnership. Together, we will work tirelessly to provide a safe environment for our children.

With Sincere Concern,

Steve Mazzi
Superintendent
